Evidence and accountability

Accountable person, organization or policy: Donald Trump

Documented issue under review: Trump described Selfridge as effectively closed by Democrats and reopened by him, but dated military records document ongoing operations. His genuine replacement-aircraft decision should not be confused with reopening a closed installation.

At his October 25, 2026 rally in Port Huron, Donald Trump credited himself with saving Selfridge Air National Guard Base. He went beyond saying he had secured its future: “It was actually effectively closed. The Democrats shut it down and I opened it.” The distinction matters. A base can face uncertainty about its next aircraft without having stopped operating. The military’s own records describe continuing operations alongside plans for replacement aircraft, not a shutdown followed by a reopening. One useful check predates Trump’s second term. A Defense Visual Information Distribution Service record dated June 27, 2024 documents airmen deploying from Selfridge to Southwest Asia. Its caption identifies personnel from the 127th Operations Group, Maintenance Group and supporting units, as well as equipment being loaded before departure. That is a record of an operating installation carrying out a mission, rather than a facility awaiting Trump’s return to reopen. The subsequent aircraft announcement also described continuity. In its May 7, 2025 account, the 127th Wing said Trump had announced that F-15EX aircraft would replace the A-10 mission when the older aircraft retired. The report describes airmen assigned to existing flying missions and a commander planning to keep flying the A-10 until its final flight. It also recalls a January 2024 Air Force plan for a future KC-46 refueling mission. Those are transitions between missions, not evidence that the installation had closed. There was a real decision for Trump to take credit for. The 127th Wing report says the new fighter assignment relieved years of uncertainty about what would replace its A-10 fleet. Protecting a future fighter role is consequential even at an operating base. Treating that decision as nonexistent would be just as inaccurate as describing it as reopening a closed installation. The relevant distinction is between securing a particular future mission and restoring operations after an actual shutdown. Bridge Michigan’s contemporaneous reporting on the rally makes that distinction explicitly: it reports that Selfridge did not close under either Trump or Biden, while acknowledging the importance of the Trump administration’s decision for the base’s future. Read together, the transcript and military records support a narrow correction. Trump helped secure replacement fighter aircraft; the evidence does not support his account of Democrats having shut Selfridge down and him reopening it. This finding concerns the historical description, not his intent or the value of the new mission.
