President Donald Trump has called for the removal from the Alaska Senate race and prosecution of Democrat Mary Peltola and a candidate named Dan Sullivan, alleging a scheme to split votes. According to a report by The New York Times, Peltola’s campaign reportedly recruited retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. to run against Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, using a name that mirrors the incumbent.
Trump, speaking at a rally in South Carolina, labeled the move 'voter fraud at the highest level,' claiming the Democrats orchestrated a ballot scheme to confuse voters. He stated that Peltola and the 'fake' Dan Sullivan should be taken off the ballot and prosecuted, asserting the actions violated campaign laws.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy responded by directing the Department of Public Safety to investigate whether the actions breached state laws. While no legal mechanism exists for automatic ballot removal, the governor emphasized the need to uphold election integrity.
The New York Times reported that campaign texts revealed efforts to recruit individuals with the same name as the Republican senator, though Peltola’s team has denied involvement.
